What a little I can do ... Volunteer Insufficiency [Diary]
What a little things I can do ... Today’s topic is a translation of AFP's emergency report.
As of Jan. 7th, 2009, AFP reported, the responsible official of the “inochi no denwa”, - the organization of “suicide hotline” - , said on Jan 7th, that they are reaching the limit of handling capacity due to the lack of manpower, facing with deterioration of suicide problem by the economic crisis. In Japan, more than 30 thousand people commit a suicide in one year. This is one of ultimate level of suicide ratio in the world.
On this hot-line, by which “inochi no denwa” executes, 7 thousand volunteers are fighting hard to respond to over 700 thousand consultation callings. Mr. Yukio Saito, the delegate of telephone service federation of “inochi no denwa”, said to AFP, “We are lacking of volunteers. We have concerns about the increase of suicide, due to the business downturn”.
The suicide ratio in Japan rose sharply in late 1990’s, after the asset-inflated growth period. Now Japanese economy is in the business recession again, because of decrease of export influenced by the world-wide financial crisis. Mr. Saito hopes the government supports the delegate federation more strongly than ever before.
Last year, Japanese government offer a subsidy of JPY 80 million for the Japanese “inochi no denwa”. This amount is 20 % less than several years ago. They said, local governments subsidized some consultation centers. In 2006, 24 person per 10 thousand Japanese peoples committed a suicide. According to the WHO, - World Health Organization - , the average in entire world is 16 people per 10 thousand people.
